In Orwell's _1984_, the government frequently
"cleared the decks" of all opportunity for rational discourse by proclaiming that contradictory terms actually meant the same:
"Freedom is Slavery" somes to mind.

I think some folks imply that ancient humans were too stupid
for the religious authorities to reveal to them
the actual process of biological evolution,
SO the religious authorities gave them Genesis.
In actuality, religious authorities are a different part of society from those who puzzle out the workings of science. True, Mendel was a priests, but his boss-priest burned many of Mendel's notes.... and reading Darwin's decidedly non-religious work had inspired Mendel.

I see no good evidence that any human being in the ancient world knew modern science -- including religious authorities.
