Jefferson's hubris in editing the Bible is akin to mine (though he was much more skillull). My aetheism began when I started to realize there were some parts of my religion that i liked and some that didn't. Consequently, I did some rationalizing and subconcious editing. I picked out those portions that I could believe and held fast to those. What eventually got to me was that there were some things that I simply could not believe in that were central to the religion, and I also realized that to the extent I was editing another religion I was creating my own, which when I lost faith in the spiritual aspects became a non-religion.
