My original challenge to anyone to argue whether this country is an "enlightened nation" was tongue in cheek. Partly because I'm distressed over our international relations and partly because, to be enlightened we'd have to be practicing Budists.

Couple of basic questions regarding this discussion.

What does it mean to be a "Christian country." Or a Budist Country, or whatever? Are we arguing whether 1) the country was founded upon "christian" principles, 2) that the law is guided by christian principles, 3) that most of the populations professes to be christian, or, most dangerously, 4) that the law should be legislating Christian ideals?

I've got no argument with 1 and 3, above, and very little disagreement with 2. What bothers me is when people start arguing for 4. That really gets my goat.
