I think enlightenment is like heat...it is a continuum, not a duality. So certainly, this is an enlightened country in some degree. Could you tinker with the question?

It is reasonable to underline that
Jesus' story helps create the First Amendment.
It is one of the few treasures of ancient literature where we take note that an individual may have deserved better treatment than "authorities" gave him.

Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, both
unconventional in some ways and not "churchy,"
were big fans of Jesus.

What say you?
