Who Is Supposed To Have The Final Word?

I think scholars have a somewhat distorted view of religion. For instance, the Pope says "no sex before marriage", yet ten out of ten Catholics do it. The founders of all major religions for a good deal of their lives professed a religion other than the one they founded - Christ was a Jew, Sidharta was a Hindu, Calvin was a Catholic, and so on. The fact that they were able to establish new religions means that, at least in their time, a lot of believers did not care much about official doctrine. I believe that to be the case everytime.

I guess my point is, I don't think religious authorities have much of a say in religious matters. In my opinion, John Doe's definition of soul matters a lot more than John Paul's. So what is it that Christians believe about the soul?
