Chris, Careful, You Are Mistaking The Surface...

for the corona of the sun. Believe it or not, the surface of the sun isn't too too hot in comparison to its interior, whose pressure pops up the temperature, or its corona. According to my book here, the corona is about 1 million K. The surface being only about 6000 K. The center of the sun is estimated at about 15 million K.
