Richard,

My understanding from Jewish history is that there was no Judaism religion prior to the second century. Prior to the second century there was a temple religion (high priest, scribes, etc). The religion of Palestine in the first century and a few centuries earlier was divided into political sects: Pharisees, Essenes, Sadducees.

Regarding commands of God, this is a very subjective issue. We can rely on revelation of certain religions, but the problem is that revelation is not consistent and is wide open for interpretation (e.g., Protestants, Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Arians, Reform Jews, Orthodox Jews, etc, etc.).

In my view, it's best to select an interpretation of religion and work toward building a consistent and reasonable perspective that somehow accounts for the evidence for and against religious views and is also meaningful. For example, religion does nothing if it doesn't provide a meaningful account of human existence.

Warm regards, Harv
