Although intelligence is an enourmous evolutionary edge, it lies at the root of greed, war, weapons of mass destruction, deceit, etc. All the good consequences of a highly evolved brain come with an equal backlash of negatives.
Nature is neutral however and doesn't care whether the human race survives or not, nor did it care much about Neanderthal. Everything just happens as it happens and we the humans assign meaning to it all. Nature doesn't discern between right & wrong, good & evil... we made all that up. We're not necessarily "better" than Neanderthal, we were just "better" at making weapons and cooperating as teams/tribes.
