To say that on the genetic level, even DNA is "trying new things"? I don't know if that could be proven, but every different form of life has a unique code of DNA is vast evidence to support this. But it would also imply of some form of underlying intelligence, wouldn't you think?

I have one other question that has been eating away at my brain for years...

Is it possible for creatures other than humans to be self aware? To know that they are there? I mean, killer whales have brains that dwarf ours by comparison. If you accidentally step on the pet's tail, it reacts. It knows its tail hurts, so wouldn't it have to know that if it has a tail it is self aware?
