If all mutations are damaging, this explains
how Mark Twain can say (something to the effect that) the damned human race DESCENDED
from ape-like ancestors
and that explains WHY we ARE LOWER than they are.

(Twain found some of humanity's historic behaviors
quite a long way below that of most apes...but he probably didn't know that the "higher" apes also do most of the simple cruelties that humans do.
