There are three choices: Science and Astronomy is one. Sam's own religion is another.
And apparently Yanniru's religion is being offered not as a choice but as inevitability.
But I think it's a choice.
And actually, there may be religions which are truly and permanently compatible with science and astronomy which have very little reference to what we normally call science or astronomy.
