Perhaps without resistance the reforms would have occurred faster, but maybe not. Resistance has a way of building up pented emotion which when finally released can launch a tremendous movement. In the case of Europe, it seems to me that what had a big impact was the phrase 'the poverty of the Latins'. After finding out what Islamic countries had in terms of Greek writings and further development, the Latins felt deprived. They coined the phrase (translated) 'the poverty of the Latins'. This, I think, more than any other phenomena led to the 'push' toward science and education.
