Mike,

In the 'real' world test scores count for very little in one's success. It is about getting along with others, having others really like you and feeling comfortable around you, as well as performing your job in a manner which is rather free from complaints and hopefully full of compliments. Did these people like you? Were you connected with them (e.g., social events, lunches, etc)? If not, then you might have become an 'outsider' and seen as someone to avoid. I hope that wasn't the case, but if so, it would explain why the GRE scores were of no consequence.
