1) He didn't steal their material. You must be joking. Everything points against it.
2) Although I like Lao Tzu's work, in some ways what it advocates is opposite what Jesus advocates as methods to a good life. The Eastern sages promotes "getting along by going along" while Jesus promotes individual conscience and creative bravery.
3) Buddha was born wealthy in a region which was NOT on the world's main trading routes and voluntarily choose the comfortable life of a "meaning of life" teacher, walking around apparently without being persecuted. Jesus was born in a world hotspot where the politics was a pressure cooker. Some of what he said has continued to be useful in forging peace or progress from bad situations. Lao Tzu was a recluse and anarchist.
