While your comments are absolutely true, I think the major problem is that if you can't attach the boards, you can't cross on them. Perhaps, I'm missing something, but a cantilever is a cantilever. And cantilever deflection depends wholely on how fixed the end is, and the force being applied on it.

Unless the boards are attached, you can not cross the boards to get to the other side.

However, as others have noted, there are plenty other ways.
