At first this morning I thought "David's Star" but this is ruled out by not allowing overlaps. Then I thought "different sized toothpicks," but this, though not specifically ruled out, seemed to be stretching the idea of "toothpicks" a bit. Then I stopped imagining lines and thought about 3D objects (like you apparently did). Specifically, a 3D shape -- and I almost responded with a reference to the movie Contact (don't remember this particular trick in the book), but thought that would have been to obvious a giveaway.

Right now I'm in both this room and the newly (for me) discovered http://www.physicsforum.com (where Alexander is still actively posting!). So at the moment I can only think of the four (that most of us wouldn't be coordinated enough to hold up), unless you allow me different-sized toothpicks and/or overlapping.
