More Than Four? Hmmm... That's A Tough One !

The way I'm looking at it is that if a triangle has 3 sides and there are 4 triangles, you must need 12 toothpicks. But if there are only 6 to work with, then each toothpick needs to act as a side for 2 triangles simultaneously. Which is exactly how the solution works.

Now I can't offhand see how to get more than four triangles...

???

I'll need to pick my brain a bit-- and if that don't work at least I can pick my teeth...
