A story in The Greatest Science Fiction Stories of All Time Volume IIA (Short Stories)
called "The Cold Equations" has a very poignant
and graphic description. I think it is the saddest science fiction story...even sadder than Arthur C. Clark's one about the star that went nova, supposedly to herald Jesus' birth...but destroying a wonderful civilization to do it.
It's sadder because we really get to know the people in the story.
