I suppose the Star Trek world you mention
was constructed of folks on an adventure so great that they were fully harnessed just trying to be good stewards of the mission of which they were a part. But they were all of career age.
In a world which always includes children and elderly, which we have been and will be, we always need someone to handle currency issues to try to represent resources in more distributable way.

I like your idea of self-fulfillment as a contrast with self-indulgence. That statement is a great economic principle! I think you've really done it with that one!
