Indeed, direct transmission is certainly possible. One of the Cambodians I sponsored- they were all Buddhists- learned from her Aunt how to pray directly to the Buddha. Then one night supposedly in a dream she was taken by a winged man to a high mountain, and then down into a cave where many men were mediatating. There she was told to stop invoking that name because it was becoming a nuisance to them and their meditation. That sounds pretty direct to me.
