Sorry for butting in, I couldn't help.

" I am constantly disturbed by the confusion of evolution as a theory and the archaelogical and historical record of life on earth, also called evolution "

I feel exactly the same!

" the ambiguity allows the creationists to capitalize on the confusion "

Yes, but does it occur to you that the opposite side sees the reverse of that situation? Just as evolutionists think history confirms the theory, creationists think refuting the theory automatically refutes history. Both sides are failing to consider the whole issue, they seem more concerned about proving each other wrong than proving themselves right.

" the facts underlying evolution do not rule out devine guidance, but that the theory in its many forms does. "

More than that, the theory is supposed to rule out divine guidance. If we are to believe in divine guidance we already have a theory.

" The creationists have a point with regard to the theory. But they are completely mistaken in regard to the history. "

Exactly.

" So they attack the theory and then claim to have undermined the history. "

And "evolutionists" boast the history and then claim to have proved the theory. Both sides are pathetic.

" So any good ideas for a new name? "

We already have: fossil record! But don't expect irrational people to pass up an opportunity to create confusion; bundling fact and fiction together is the easiest way to assert both as true or false, depending on what your personal preferences are.

Great post, Richard!
