Using the dictionary is a way to conform to standards...and a code of ethics depends on actual standards which are published.
A code of ethics is the only way I understand
ethics to have any real meaning. Otherwise,
it's just like your less-clearly defined versions of morality...also known as "conventional
wisdom," which may vary from group to group
and may be based on good information or ignorance.

Certainly, without a published code, there is more
opportunity for flimflam artists to deceive.
