I have in my hand a piece of "fossilized" coral from Flowerpot Island off the coast of Tobermory, Ontario. Also, when hiking on the cobble beach along the Bruce Trail, I couldn't help but notice all the dolostone. This dolostone is the capstone of the Niagara Escarpment. This dolostone used to be living coral.

Please explain how this coral formed and then fossilized in such a short period of time? Would you also like to explain the large 8 foot diameter, 15 foot deep pothole that was carved in the escarpment on the Lillie Side Trail up on the escarpment?
