The British BS is equivalent to the US masters degree; and although the PhD implies a special expertise, it is the final degree in science. On the other hand, the MD is the first degree in medicine. The British equivalent is the Bachelors of Medicine.

On this basis, physicians do not have the right to be called Doctors, unless they go on to get a PhD in order to do research in their field. Only PhDs should be called Doctor.
