I like stuff like this. It forces you to relegate consciousness to one of two places: either it's caused by simple natural causes like everything else (in this case a human's consciousness is no more special than a river forming a canyon: it's simply cause and effect) or there is something fundamentally special and different about life that allows it genuine free will: that is, an action can take place with no predictable cause. Personally I take the naturalistic standpoint.
