My belief is that souls go thru a developmental evolution from lower forms to higher forms of life thru the process of rebirth. That was also the belief of at least some of the ancient Greek philosophers whence the concept of the soul and its transmigration came from. At similar concept was taught by the Buddha but with more emphasis on transmigration as he did not believe that the self or soul existed, which makes one wonder what was being reborn.

So god gave the greeks the idea of the soul which was later incorporated into Christianity and gave Indians the concept of transmigration. The Jews were not big on the soul and instead believed that when you die you are dead, period. You do not go to heaven- you are just dead until resurrection. Nowadays most Jews still believe that they do not go to heaven.

So bottomline- souls evolved along with lifeforms-and will continue to evolve in higher levels of spirituality until they each become like gods. That is the message I get from Jesus and most other religions.
