As far as I can tell, it is only a few in the Orthodox branch that take the Torah literally. I know of no rabis in either conservative or reform that do, and I have been a member of both conservative & reform temples. I am sure that the Reconstructionists do not as well.

I have a friend who is a physicist and is orthodox. He does not take it literally.
He just observes the traditions of his faith as just that- traditions. He claims that most other orthodox have similar views, but that is second hand. What this forum needs is a good Hasidic to answer questions like these.

It was true that the book was meant to be taken literally and the ancient Hebrews did so- once it was turned into a scroll that is. For a very long time except for the tablets, it was an oral tradition.

Nowadays the jewish religion as far as I can tell supports modern science all the way. They use a calendar dated from ancient thinking. But they realize that the earth and universe are billions of years old, because that can be proven conclusively using astronomical data. If you can provide links to rabis that say the earth is 6,000 years old, please do.

Regards,

Richard
