Here's The Problem

If you are taught that a literal interpretation is absolutely true, and your environment around you strongly encourages this kind of thinking, then often it is nearly impossible for such an individual to re-consider any other possibility than their beliefs being true. Unfortunately these folks treat science as if it is a biblical doctrine that they should innately oppose at all costs. They only need to cite a few verses from the Bible, or in this case cite a few complications that need to be explained, and they go on their merry way thinking that they can believe whatever they want and still be rational. This kind of behavior (along with what's going on in the political world) makes me lose a little hope in humanity's ability to overcome ignorance and the consequences ignorance brings.
