The forces didn't come together, they came 'apart'. That is, as the universe cooled it allowed other properties to emerge. One of those properties was electromagnetism so that light was possible, another was the weak force so that radioactive decay would occur, another was nuclear bonding that allowed atoms to form, and another was gravity. The force of gravity was the first force to break off from the superforce.

The reason for all of this is still not understood. As Yanniru mentioned, there are different theories as to why the universe came to exist. My personal preference is that the universe emerged from quantum foam (i.e, 'nothing'). But, these are all speculative issues.

The important issue is that faith in God is key. Physics is not religion. But, it can enhance one's faith if one is willing to allow it do to so.
