Richard,

Philosophers are very apt to change their views. There's this inaccurate perception that philosophy is not an advancing field like science, but rather philosophy has made some very significant insights. For example, pragmatism is a very recent development in philosophy (i.e., relatively speaking), and it is finding it's way into almost every nook and cranny of philosophy. Philosophy is akin to a mature mind that understands the pitfalls of our naive beliefs.
