Genetics research indicates that we are all descended from a single mother, based on the study of mutations in the DNA of microchondria(Sp?), and a single father based on studies of mutations in the Y chromosome. However, they were not married, did not live together, and were not even alive at the same time.

So on the basis of modern genetics the Adam & Eve story is correct in principle. It's just that the details are not quite right.
