Estimating the majority of non-athiest, non-agnostic persons are mainly basing their beliefs on what they are told or what they read in the religion's source book, and have had no coursework in philophy, law or political prepare them for formal opeations.
Religion is created mostly by the most literate and comfortable for the benevolent purpose of making world better...but is sometimes weak.
Remember, please, that the most literate and comfortable are, as far as we know, among the universe's best minds and souls, and many of them are trying to be completely honest in conveying a very deep subject which is difficult to update due to pressure from the market below them.
