A 'top mind' is one of those rare individuals whose research (in their particular field) stands out heads and shoulders above the rest in that field. For example, Murray Gell-Mann is a 'top mind' (or was in the 1960's). Richard Feynman was a top mind. So was Dirac, Einstein, Maxwell, Heisenberg, etc, etc. The list is a long list. Many top minds are alive today hacking out the solutions to problems.
