Maybe it happened like this....

A bunch of power hungry people decided to involve themselves in the business of mind control. They set up 10 rules that you must live by or you go into a scorching hell of an existence. If you obey them you get to live the life of a prince in the pearly gates of heaven. Sounds like a fairy tale my mother told me when I was five. I guess some people never grow up.
