We have taken the phrase 'we are all equal' to mean that there are no 'top minds' or 'authorities', everyone is opinion is equal in truth (esp. each individual's opinion).

Certainly there is some truth to that, but at the same time we have to be careful not to accept or believe anything just because an expert says so. If people always defer to authority (especially in the case of politicians) then I think we'd be in worse shape than having to deal with a few arrogant pricks now and again. :) If I had deferred to my family's authority (ie the top minds of my childhood) I'd be singing quite a different tune on this board right now.
