John Horgan is correct regarding math and physics. But we still have a long way to go in all the other sciences. And technology based on the hard and soft sciences will continue to advance.

I think it is much more likely that science will end because people will just stop supporting it rather than our running out of new things to discover. The best recent example is the SupeConductingCollider SCC that congress would not fund.

The US has the creationists to fear in this regard as well. Fundamentalism in the world has always inhibited science. Christianity has its examples- gallileo. But the best example is Islam. They had the very best math and science. But then their fundamentalists took over and research came to an end. They can even quote from the Koran that research is ungodly. We had long discussions on that on this forum when jisbond was still contributing. If they had maintained their edge in math and science, we would all be Moslims by now.
