According to Alan Watts, himself a former Anglican minister, 'belief' was from an Anglo-Saxon word for "strong wish."
I've heard that disputed too.
The song Amazing Grace contains a line
"the day I first believed."
Jimmy Durante used to say," You gotta believe!"

Anyway, the church I (and Yanniru, apparently, and who else here?)
were raised in a denomination that was founded near Aberdeen, Scotland
and as you know those folks probably invented of early modern science per capita than any other nation.

This denomination also raised Darwin and Newton.
It's convenient to have a support system with an ostensible mission that is not only about temporal power. I admit I don't care about the Trinity as theology, and though I'm not as good at calculus as he was 375 years ago, neither did Isaac Newton.

Ya know, the code of Hammurabi
