"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" allows you some leeway, but offers some protection for others from the effects of one's unbridled lying. Why should you admit to a Nazi that you are hiding an intellectual in your attic?

As you say, science addresses this pretty well.
Remember, of course, the founders of science were religious in their own way, though not conventional.
