The discussions on this forum are largely concerned with points of disagreement betweenscientific and religious observations. Perhaps it is time to direct our attention on some points of agreement. For my part I suggest a major point of agreement- that human beings are unique in the universe. I cannot indicate specific scripture that makes this statement, but it does seem to be a fairly common belief among the faithful, particularly Christians. On this point scienitific observation is in agreement. No signals from other than the earth have ever been detected using scientific instruments. Scientific analysis also suggests that the conditions leading to conscious human life are so fragile and convoluted that the chance of it being replicated even within our galaxy of 100 billion suns is small. So from scientific considerations, human life in the universe must be extremely rare, so that our present existence can be called unique with a good deal of accuracy. There is an additional political factor that enhances our present uniqueness. Once human-like lifeforms are somehow created in the universe, they soon attain the ability to destroy themselves on a global scale, in a period of time that is short even on the Young Earth time scale. So if we average over time, the probability of intelligent lifeforms existing at any point of time in any galaxy is close to nil.
