... physics matters is different than saying that *only* physics matters. That is what originally confused me by your statement.

It is abundantly clear that he believes that physics and mathematics matter very much in our understanding of our universe. I could be wrong, but I have never seen Alex say that other disciplines (like philosophy) do not matter at all.
