which makes the mean orbital v ~ 19.4 Km/s. The orbit is a big ellipse. Looking at the orbital position of the asteroid with respect to the 'fly by' Earth I would estimate that the orbital v is much closer to 20 Km/s than 40 Km/s. The difference in projected destruction isn't worth getting excited about. |
