Well, Java applets would only run in the client and would not have much effect on anything here.

Cookies should not be a problem from pages generated here as they are set in the headers which I generate. However, it could be a problem if you follow links embedded into posts to other sites.

That said, the Astronomy Net is not an anonymous service. There is not much I can do to verify the identity of folks because I use an email confirmation system, but this seems to be working quite well. With a working email I have some recourse if things go very wrong and authorities need a path to the culprit past this system.

The only thing I keep off the web pages is the email of the user account to prevent the harvesting of email addresses into bulk mail systems. Other than that I expose usernames and their real names (in the posts).
