Okay Al,
Maybe it did happen.
But Puritans have a point in making that distinction
between the "merely mechanical universe" and the
FEATURE (either new or old) that abstractly ponders itself and others...
If you make no distinction between the
"drawing board" function of the universe
and all the "impulsive, no pre-thought functions"
then you must explain all human behavior with simple classical physics equations. I have not seen anyone even crawl over the toe-nail of that quesstion.
If you read my previous post
referring to The Soul of the Universe, a book by Einstein's friend. you would know I don't mind being atoms.

By the way, are dead skin cells reincarnated?
