medicre persons must greatly outnumber geniuses
by most definitions of those two terms.

with the same error rate in both cases, there must be more mis-estimates of mediocre persons than of geniuses.

The crowd, of course, can be led to their beliefs by demagogues ("appeal to emotion instead of reason")

Another interesting angle
In a communist country such as China, there are no geniuses who do not have black hair and a good tan (and almost all will be of the male gender)! If they bring their system here, you can again "follow the crowd!"
