Someone always tries to climb to the top of the heap. If somone insists there is no rank, quality or degree higher than humans, then it follows they will more quickly. consider their own conclusions to be final . They will close their books on a question sooner. They will not check their work as much.

It is the tendency of social primates including mankind to form hierarchies. So the top humans in a society which denies any higher "rank, quality or degree" than human exists will believe themselves to be the lawgivers of the moment...lawgivers who do not check their work as much.

This is not an endorsement of organized religion but of rigor. I don't care as much for catchphrases and moral indignation as I do for a group of persons who reliably show respect for integrity, due process, mystery, wonder . . . good communication values, science.
