Dick,

Can you tell us why your argument is less religious than Harv's?

Everyone rests his knowledge upon a basic creed. Alex's basic creed is math, yours is logic. Mine is, I believe, very close to Harv's so I have very little to add. But, to give you a short answer, if I'm the only conscious being in the whole universe, I sure as hell don't want to know about it, so as far as I'm concerned the question is irrelevant.

As to whether computers will one day be conscious, I regard the issue as philosophical sophistry, not unlike the old debate on the sex of the angels. That is, until I see a computer that appears to be conscious, or an angel, I won't waste precious neurological resources mulling over a senseless issue.

Sorry if I let you down.
