As per US Code, the moment you write an essay, record a song, take a picture, paint a pciture, etc, is the moment the copyright begins.

Whether or not you were the first to write/paint/record the copyrighted material is a different matter.

In order to safeguard your work, you can send a copy of it to the Feds, pay 25 bucks or so, and protect the copyright.

(p)

If anyone accuses you of plagiarism, you can produce the protected copyright, complete with a form from the US register of copyrights.

It's all very Brazil-esque (the movie), and it is a scam, really.
