You are correct in that terrorism looks different when it occurs on one's own soil. I myself am guilty of looking at the Chechnya terrorism differently after September 11. The trouble, I feel, is not altogether our fault. Afterall, in our memory we have the memory of Soviet tanks rolling into Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Afghanistan (not too mention shouting down commerical airlines with hundreds of innocent civilians, threats of burying the United States, developed genetic modified biological weapons after signing a treaty, suitcase nuke bombs, etc). It is perhaps difficult to assess which country is being afflicted - the one that Reagan called the evil empire or the one that wishes to join the community of nations. If the latter, then I think we should all join forces to fight terrorism.

Warm regards, Harv
