Are You Serious?

Hi Alex,

Forgive me for taking you seriously if your intent was to make a joke. But I think you may be on to something.

The essential difference may be our respective experiences with freedom. In the U.S. we have a tradition of freedom, particularly of thought and speech. In the Soviet Union I expect you grew up in an atmosphere which discouraged free speech, if not free thought. In that atmosphere, there would be a definite survival advantage "To follow leader or someone who "knows better"."

I feel delightfully free to consider any wild hypothesis I like and I feel only a little less free to express the idea to others. I think there may be some deep seated reticence on your part when you consider some "unofficial" or "unorthodox" ideas.

Is this what you were getting at? Or was your response just a joke?

Warm regards,

Paul
