Just an opinion you understand, but I do not think "fields" stand to be the great "new" idea. Field theory has already been pushed for several hundred years; the concept of "quantized fields" is the standard view of the majority of scientists and breakthroughs seldom come from the majority position. Fields are a mathematical convenience and not a basic entity. The existence of any field is arrived at by induction: i.e., there exists no way to prove any field exists except as a *reason* for your measurements. That is, it is a creation of your mind.
